Formats and Competitions

What is the difference in betting across cricket's three formats?

Each format has its own pace and tactics — so the betting markets differ too. It helps to understand what kind of bets are available in each format before you start.

T20 Cricket

The fastest and most popular format. BPL, IPL, T20 World Cup — matches are decided in just 20 overs, so the situation in betting can shift over by over. T20 is the most active format for live markets.

BPL IPL T20 World Cup

ODI Cricket

Strategy matters more in a 50-over match. The scope for betting is wider as you factor in score, wickets and run rate through the middle of an innings. The ICC Cricket World Cup and Asia Cup are the top events in this format.

World Cup Asia Cup Bilateral Series

Test Cricket

In this five-day format, a draw is a possible result, so the match winner market has three options. Pitch behaviour and weather play a major role in how bets are calculated.

Cricket vs Football — differences in betting

Cricket betting is followed most closely in Bangladesh because people across the country watch every match of the Tigers together. In T20, a dramatic change is possible on every ball — a six or a wicket can shift live odds instantly.

Football matches run for 90 minutes and fewer goals mean the odds stay relatively stable. In other sports like tennis, badminton or basketball, bets can be placed on a set-by-set basis. Each sport has its own market structure — in cricket you get markets like 'top batsman' or 'first wicket method', while in football you get 'first goalscorer' or 'corner count'.

hhbd has sports markets beyond cricket and football. Read our betting tips page for guidance on the right way to bet — it has detailed advice for both new and experienced bettors.

Betting Markets

Popular cricket betting markets and how they work

The markets below are the most used before a match and during live play. A brief example is given for each.

Match Winner

A bet on which team will win the match. T20 and ODI offer two options (Team A or Team B); Test offers three (Team A, Team B or draw). The simplest and most common market.

All Formats

Toss Betting

A bet on which team will win the toss. This is completely separate from the match result — it depends solely on the toss. Since both teams have an equal chance, the odds are usually close.

T20 · ODI · Test

Top Batsman

A bet on which batsman will score the most runs for their team. For example, picking the highest run-scorer from Team A's lineup.

ODI · T20

Total Runs Over/Under

A bet on whether the total runs scored by the end of a specific over or a full innings will be above (over) or below (under) a set number. Example: whether Team A will score more than 160 runs in 20 overs.

T20 · ODI

Multi Bet (Multiple Selections)

Multiple matches or markets are combined into a single bet. You win only if every selection is correct; if even one is wrong, the entire bet is lost. However, a successful multi bet returns significantly more.

All Sports

First Wicket Method

A bet on how the first wicket will fall — bowled, caught, run out, LBW or another method. A cricket-specific market available only in cricket.

Test · ODI

Handicap and Over/Under Markets

In handicap betting, the weaker team is given a notional advantage to make the chances of both sides appear equal. In over/under markets, what matters is whether the result lands above or below a given number — both markets are better understood by describing the outcome than by calculating a stake or return figure.

hhbd odds format — decimal, fractional, American comparison
Understanding Odds

Decimal, fractional and American odds — three ways to express the same value

The same bet value can be written in three different formats. The numbers look different in each format but the return is the same. Decimal format is used most at hhbd because multiplying directly gives you the total return.

Example 1 — Bet on the favourite to win (Team A wins)

The same odds written in three formats: decimal 2.50 = fractional 3/2 = American +150.

A ৳1,000 bet returns a total of ৳2,500 if Team A wins (৳1,500 profit + ৳1,000 original stake). If Team A loses, ৳1,000 is lost.

Example 2 — Bet on the favourite (Team B wins)

Decimal 1.25 = fractional 1/4 = American -400. A negative American odds figure shows how much you need to stake to make ৳100 profit.

A ৳1,000 bet returns a total of ৳1,250 if Team B wins (৳250 profit).

Lower odds mean that outcome is considered more likely — so the profit is also lower. Higher odds mean a less likely outcome — the return is greater if it wins. Betting is always for entertainment, not as a reliable source of income.

Live Betting

In-play betting — odds that change with every wicket and over

Live betting during a match is a different experience from standard pre-match betting. The situation changes after every ball, so odds update quickly.

  • When a wicket falls — the bowling team's chances of winning increase, and the batting team's odds lengthen (higher return, but higher risk too).
  • During powerplay overs — fielding restrictions mean more runs are likely, which shifts the over/under market.
  • Slow run rate in the middle overs — if runs dry up, pressure grows on the chasing team and live odds reflect that.
  • Big hitter in the death overs — an experienced hitter coming in late can shift the market balance again.
  • Weather and DLS — if rain stops play, the DLS method may apply, which has a direct effect on live markets.

Practical Advice

Useful tips for cricket betting

Betting is for entertainment. Keeping the following points in mind will make the experience better.

01

Focus on one format

Rather than betting across T20, ODI and Test all at once, start by sticking to the format you understand best.

02

Set a budget

Decide how much you will bet before each match. Avoid placing extra bets to try to recover losses.

03

Be careful with multi bets

Multi bets offer higher returns but every selection must be correct. Adding more than one selection raises the risk quickly.

04

Bet responsibly

Betting is for entertainment only. Instead of chasing losses, read the responsible gaming guidelines and stay within your limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about cricket betting

Match winner, toss and total runs over/under markets are available in all three formats. T20 has more over-by-over run markets. In ODI, partnership and innings-break score markets are popular. In Test, the match winner market has three outcomes (Team A win, Team B win, draw), so the odds structure is different.

In pre-match betting, you place your bet before the match starts and the odds are relatively stable. In live or in-play betting, you bet while the match is in progress — odds update in real time after every wicket, boundary or over. Live betting requires more experience as there is less time to decide.

You can generally build a multi bet starting from 2 selections. The more selections you add, the higher the combined odds — but the lower the chance of all selections being correct. For example, three selections at 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.70 = 3.57 combined odds; a ৳100 bet returns ৳357 if all are correct, but if even one is wrong the entire ৳100 is lost.

If a match is stopped due to rain, the result is usually determined by the DLS method. Under the betting platform's own rules, bets may be void or settled on the DLS result if a specified number of overs have not been completed. These rules may differ for each market, so it is worth reading the Terms and Conditions.

Both BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) and IPL (Indian Premier League) are T20 format, so the market types are broadly the same — match winner, toss, total runs, top batsman, and so on. The differences lie mainly in the number of teams, player quality and the scale of the competition. IPL has more teams and more matches, so the market variety is also greater.
